Dr. Peter E. Hanlon

Peter Edward Hanlon, M.D. died at his home in Easton, MD on April 6, 2006 after a long illness. He was 87. His wife and five children were at his side. Dr. Hanlon was born September 19, 1918 in Queens Village, NY. He was the son of the late Peter E. Hanlon and Celestine C. Smith of Floral Park, NY. After graduation from LaSalle Military Academy, he attended Villanova College, where he was president of the class of 1940. He was the first graduate from Villanova to be accepted into Cornell University Medical College. After graduation from Cornell and his internship and junior residency in surgery at Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla, NY, Dr. Hanlon was called to active duty as an officer in the Medical Corps Reserve. He served at the end of World War II and again during the Korean War. After his active duty service he was affiliated with the Munn-Koch Clinic in Janesville, WI. In 1953, the family relocated to Glen Rock, NJ where he had a private practice and was a member of the Department of Surgery and the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ until his retirement in 1984. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Abdominal Surgery (Founders Group 1960). Professional society memberships included the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of New Jersey, and the Bergen County Medical Society. Dr. Hanlon was a member of the Trauma Committee for the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He also served as football team physician for the Glen Rock Board of Education for ten years. He was an avid golf enthusiast. Dr. Hanlon succeeded in scoring a hole in one, not once but twice. He and his wife were members of Arcola Country Club in Paramus, NJ and Talbot Country Club in Easton, MD. Peter E. Hanlon is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Geraldine, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. John F. Cremens. They were married June 17, 1943 in Paterson, NJ. He is also survived by his daughters, Maureen H. Whalen of Leesburg, VA, Patricia A. Hanlon-Tylor of McDaniel, MD, and Anne Kathleen Bonham of Bloomingdale, NY and his sons, James J. Hanlon of St. Michaels, MD and Peter E. Hanlon of Easton, MD. Dr. Hanlon has twelve grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Irene Farrell. Calling hours will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on April 20, 2006 at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Easton, MD. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton at 11:00 a.m. on April 21, 2006. Burial in Oxford Cemetery will be private.
