Dorothy Alice Durham

Mrs. Durham, 85 of Millington, MD, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001 after an extended illness. At the time of her death she was at Bay Health Medical Center, Inc. in Dover, DE She was a life long resident of Maryland, born in Still Pond, MD to parents, Harry H. & Ida [Webb] Jones. Dorothy married L. Anthony Durham, a marriage that spanned 62 years. Together they raised a family of five. She was devoted to her husband and family. She was very family oriented and enjoyed family activities, particularly enjoying her time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dorothy Durham was not only a life long resident of Kent County MD, she was an active participant in her community. She was committed to the work of Asbury United Methodist Church in Millington where she served in the United Methodist Women, she was a member of the Tuesday morning Bible Study Group as well as being a teacher and devotion leader. She also participated in a reading program for the children. As a poet, an artist, culinary Epicurean and gardener, her talents for capturing the beauty of life were enjoyed by many through her entertaining and love of family. Her accomplishments included being a published poet, producing a variety of artistic works, creating notable flower gardens, preparing gourmet food, and constantly pursuing other artistic interest such as opera. Mrs. Durham is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, L. Anthony Durham, (1997) her daughter, Barbara Woodhall, and son Anthony Eric Durham, her brother Russell, and her sisters, Helen, Clara and Virginia. Her survivors include, 2 daughters, Alice “Dolly” Ingram of Dover, De, Harriett Simon of Smyrna, DE, a son Allan V. Durham of Millington, MD, her brother James Jones of Rush, KY, her 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 14th at 11 a.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral home in Millington, MD. Friends and family may call during the hour before the service. In Lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions be made in her name to the Asbury United Methodist Church in Millington, MD 21651. These memorial contributions will endorse one of her commitments to others.
