Doris Isabel Walters

Born on September 5, 1922 in Easton, MD, she was the daughter of the late, Florence Hunter Legg and Oscar Ezekial Legg. Mrs. Walters was raised on Kent Island and graduated from Stevensville High School, Class of 1939. Her parents were farmers and she grew up living and working on farms in the Kent Point and Batts Neck areas of Kent Island. As the older sister, she helped raise and dearly loved her three brothers, Harold, William, and Jinx. On April 20, 1946, she married George Edward Walters of Chester, MD. She worked in banking and for Montgomery Ward until her future husband returned from the U.S. Army after having served five years in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Mrs. Walters then became a homemaker. She was very devoted to her family all her life and loved her many friends and relatives. She enjoyed flower gardening and the beautiful scenery so abundant from her home on Cox Creek. She was a member of Kent Island Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years, and a former member of the XYZ Social Club in the local area. She was also an avid fan of the Lindy’s Ladies women’s softball team. She enjoyed traveling, even if it was just to Rock Hall to visit dear friends, or around her beloved Kent Island. She loved reading and spending summer days in the ‘Shore House’ picking and eating crabs her husband caught from their pier. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and many wonderful nieces and nephews, with the most notable event being the annual 4th of July picnic. Mrs. Walters is survived by her husband, George Edward Walters; two sons, Harold Edward Walters and his wife, Lilian (Sam) Walters of Chester, MD and Gary Legg Walters and his wife, Joann Mary Walters of Chester, MD; and three grandchildren, Brooke Nicole Walters, Jennifer Leigh Walters and John Mitchell Walters, all of Chester, MD. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Medford Legg, William Ezekial Legg, and Oscar “Jinx” Legg. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Chester, MD where funeral services will be held 11AM on Wednesday, November 28, 2007. Interment will follow in Stevensville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to: Kent Island United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 27, Stevensville ,MD 21666, or Hospice of Kent County, 125 Lynchberg Street, Chestertown, MD 21620 or Hospice of Queen Anne’s, Inc., 423 Thompson Creek Road, Stevensville, MD 21666.
