Doris B. Riley Slaughter

Doris B. Riley Slaughter passed away quietly on March 4, 2011 in Brookview at the home of her granddaughter, Shelly and her husband J. Duane Hurley. Doris was born October 28, 1924, the eldest child of Lillie Christopher Baynard and Dudley Rose Baynard. Doris graduated from Trappe High School, Class of 1943. She then earned her RN at MacQueen Gibbs Willis School of Nursing in Easton. She worked at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. Doris married John Clinton Riley on March 24, 1951 at Anchorage. The couple moved to Greenbelt, MD, where they raised their child, Jack. During this time, Mrs. Riley worked at the University of Maryland in College Park as a nurse. Upon the couple’s retirement in 1978, Doris returned to the family farm in Trappe. Together, they attended Immanuel Lutheran Church, where Doris served on the Altar Guild. John passed away in April 1981. Doris’ mother, Lillie came to live with Doris in 1991 until her death in 2004. Doris then married James O. Slaughter in 1999. In 2007, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. When James died, she lived with Shelly and JD until her passing. She will be remembered as being a good mother and grandmother, caring nurse, and devoted caretaker for her mother. Doris also had the honor of being a godmother to four children: Kurt, Darlene, Shelly and Karen She is survived by her grandchildren: Shelly Hurley and her husband, J. Duane of Brookview, and their children: Constance, Joseph, Christina, Courtney and Natalie; her brothers, James Baynard and his wife, Rosemary, William Baynard and his wife, Ramona, both of Trappe; her sister Margaret Wright of Trappe; two uncles: Lloyd and Avery Christopher; her special friend, Martha-Ann Schmick of Preston; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parent, she was preceded in death by her son, John G. Riley and his wife, Mary Jo Riley. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, March 10 at Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton, with William Slaughter, Joseph Mensh Jr., Keith Baynard, Scott Baynard, Bruce Baynard and Robert Baynard serving as pall bearers. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 10 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Easton. Both services will be officiated by Doris’ dear pastor, Kevin Graudin.
