Doris "Bootsie" Mae Hunley

Doris "Bootsie" Mae Hunley passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 11, 2024 at the age of 84. Doris was born on June 11, 1940, in Chestertown, Maryland, to the late Ruth Ann Wilson and Richard Allen Jones Sr. She grew up in Kent County, MD and graduated from the Henry Highland Garnet School in 1957. Doris had a long and dedicated career, working at various companies, including VitaFoods in Chestertown, the Lumar Factory in Dover DE, Allan Foods in Cordova MD, and Rose's in Chestertown MD, where she retired as a department head in 2007. Doris gave her life to Christ at Mt. Olive AME Church in Worton, MD, where she actively participated in the choir, holding the title of Booster. She also served as a trustee and usher, and offered her support wherever needed. She loved watching Family Feud, In the Heat of the Night, and the Young and the Restless. Her favorite color was green. Doris loved good food. Her favorite meal was fried chicken and a Pepsi, and her favorite snack was watermelon. She was always chewing on her Double Mint gum. She was known as a friendly person who loved her family and friends dearly. She loved the Lord – she prayed daily for her children and loved the hymn “I Had A Talk With God”. Doris will be remembered as a woman of her word, known for her honesty and integrity. “She said what she meant and meant what she said.” She was the matriarch of her family, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Doris is predeceased by her husband Velma Hunley; two brothers, Noris Tilghman, Jr. and Richard Jones, Jr.; sister, Shirley Jones; aunts, Helen Burke and Carolyn Mckinney; son, Byron “Donny” Hunley; cousins, Shirley Wright and Connie Cannon and daughter-in-law Joy Hunley. She leaves behind to mourn her five children: Melvin Freeman (Barbara) of Federalsburg, MD, Vera Freeman-Joe (Leroy) of Bartow, FL, Andrew Hunley (Frederica) of Moreno Valley, CA, Pamela Hunley of Rock Hall, MD, and Reginald Hunley of Atlanta, GA; fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; goddaughter, DuRanda Jones; brothers-in-law, Ronald Hunley and William Jones; sisters-in-law, Emily Acree and Joyce Jeffers; special cousins, Ella Chambers, Ermyn Black; cousin/sister, Debbie Burke; devoted spiritual daughter, Kim; best friend, Shirley Wright; as well as a host of cousins and countless friends. Services will be held on Saturday, December 28 at 12:00 pm at Mt. Olive AME Church in Worton, MD. A viewing will be held one hour prior, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm at the church. Interment to follow at the Mt. Olive AME Church Cemetery.
