Donald Hillman Smith

Donald Hillman Smith of St. Michaels, MD died on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at Memorial Hospital at Easton, at the age of 63. Born March 9, 1943 in Connellsville, PA; He was the son of the late Gerald Hillman Smith and Leanor Agnes Swiger Smith of Wheeling WV. After graduating from Suitland High School in 1961, he joined the U.S. Army, where he served on the United States rifle team. A distinguished marksman, he ranked in the top ten of the country. After receiving his honorable discharge, Donald began his lengthy career in the elevator trade working for various companies which included Otis, Elco, and General. In addition, Donald took his prior knowledge of the trade and ultimately became Superintendent of Dover Elevator Company in London, Ontario. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Odenton, MD and a member of the Gambrills, Odenton Recreational Center (G.O.R.C.), where he coached both little and minor league baseball and football for many years. Donald was a member of the International Union of Elevator Contractors and a member of the Locals #7 and #10. Don shared a passion for hunting, sports, antique cars & auctions, socializing with people, cruising in his car running errands, and spending quality time with his family and friends. Mr. Smith is survived by three children, Donald Alan Smith and his spouse Shelly Anne of Edgewater, Donna Margaret Scharch and her husband Larry Scharch Jr. of St. Michaels, and Susan Elizabeth Eberhard and her husband Robert Bryan Eberhard of Trappe; one brother, Richard William Smith and his two children Richard and Jennifer; five grandchildren, Donald E. Smith, Teresa L. Smith, Benjamin D. Howard, Dustin A. Smith, and Elizabeth A. Scharch. Lastly Donald is survived by former wife and mother of his children, Margaret Francis Olds. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, where friends may call on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 PM. Burial will be at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD. Memorial donations may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth St. NW, Washington, DC 20006-3517.
