Donald Herbert Stewart Jr.

Donald H. Stewart, Jr. of Chestertown, MD, passed away Tuesday September 2, 2013, at the Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with his family at his side. He was 84. Born December 1, 1928, in Kane, PA, he was the son of Donald H. Stewart and Leatha Lucore Stewart and grew up in New Castle, PA. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a “China Marine.” In 1953, he was recalled to serve in the Korean conflict In 1950, he married his wife of 63 years, Maxine Carlson Stewart. He was preceded in death by a brother Lt. Col. (Ret) Gerald W. Stewart and an infant son, Donald H. Stewart, III. He has one surviving brother, David H. Stewart of Chicago, Il. He leaves a behind a wife and four children, James A. Stewart, Sr. (Doria,) Timothy E. Stewart (Dovie), Dr. Kimberly S. Johnston (Peter), and Simthia L. Stewart; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He graduated from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA ,with a BS in Elementary Education in 1959 and received a MS in Supervision and Administration from Duquesne University Pittsburg, PA in 1963 He attended West Virginia University in Morgantown for doctoral studies in 1966. In 1969, he accepted a position as principal of Sudlersville Elementary School where he remained until he retired in 1983. He was dedicated to all children and their right to an excellent education. “Don” was a member of the Queen Annes’ County Retired Teachers’ Assn. and Maryland Retired School Personnel Assn., Queen Anne’s County SPS, and a life member of the Maryland PTA. He is a member and Past Master of Centreville Lodge #180, AF&AM, a member of the Scottish Rite, a past member of the Boumi Temple Legion of Honor Drill Team and also a charter member and Past Patron of the Chestertown Chapter #89 OES. He was a 35 year member of the Centreville, MD, American Legion Post 18. He also was a member of the Geneva College Lettermens Assn., and a member of Wesley Chapel, Rock Hall. The Stewart family would like to acknowledge Dr. Wayne D. Benjamin and the staff of the Chestertown Nursing and Rehab Center for the excellent care and support they provided over the past nine years. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown, Maryland where a public viewing will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2013, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at 130 p.m., on Speer Road in Chestertown, Md. 21620; and a funeral service will follow Friday, September 6, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Donald H Stewart, Jr., Queen Anne’s County High School Send to Memorial Scholarship Fund at 416 Goldsboro St. Easton, MD 21601.
