David Clarke Bowen

David Clarke Bowen, of Ocean Pines, formerly of Easton, died at the Atlantic General Hospital, Berlin, on Monday, December 29, 2003. He was 70. Born in Alaska, August 28, 1933, he was the son of the late David C. Bowen of Elizabeth Island, AK and Anne Norton Bowen Cross of Kodiak, AK. After graduating from Anchorage High School in Anchorage, Alaska, he served in the United States Army. Following his release from active duty, he attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO where he received his degree in Anthropology. He later earned his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Maryland. During his working career, he was an Education Specialist for the Department of the Navy then worked as a Real Estate Agent in New York and Maryland. He was then associated with the Maryland Department of Social Services before retiring in October of 2003 as a Juvenile Counselor for the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. Before moving to Ocean Pines several weeks ago, he had lived on the Eastern Shore since 1988, principally in the Easton and St. Michaels area. Previous residences included Boulder, CO, Silver Spring, MD and Oyster Bay, NY. A member of Christ Church in St. Michaels and the St. Andrews Society of the Eastern Shore, he enjoyed all kinds of music and played the five string banjo in Blue Grass Bands. He fishing and sailing and was a member and Past Trustee of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club in Oyster Bay, N.Y. Mr. Bowen is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Priscilla “Chloe” Alden Gibb whom he married March 7, 1957 in Boulder, CO; three sons, Russell Scott Bowen and Geoffrey David Bowen, both of Rockville, MD, and John Gibb Bowen of Deerfield Beach, FL; a sister, Beth Ann Cross of Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers, Jay Cross of Big Lake, Alaska and Donald Richard Cross of Long Island, N.Y. and six grandchildren, Melissa Hourihan, Michael Hourihan, Manley Hourihan, Caitlyn Hourihan, Daniel Clark Bowen and Evan Bowen. Memorial services will be held at Christ Church, St. Michaels, MD on Monday, January 12, 2004, at 11 A.M. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601. Funeral arrangements are by the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton.
