David Stonely

David Stonely of Rock Hall, MD, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, from ALS. He was 62. David Stonely was born June 5, 1949, in Ilford South, in the County of Essex, England. He was the son of the late Arthur Stonely and Marjorie Agnes "Walker” Stonely. Mr. Stonely was a graduate of Clark's Schools in 1966. Thereafter he received an ONC and HNC in Chemistry from the National Rubber College in 1967 followed by a National Certificate in Science from Rush Green College in 1969. In 1976, he left Schlagel to join McCorquodale Plc. and moved to the US for what he thought would be a four-week stay. In 1980 he married Joyce Helen Stonely in Owings Mills, MD. By 1990 Mr. Stonely was Vice President of Business Devl. for McCorquodale’s US Holding Company and that year moved to Rock Hall, MD. Mr. Stonely became president, CEO, and an owner of McCorquodale Security Cards Inc. in 1991 and served as De La Rue Card Systems Inc. from 1996-1999. In the first 5 years, he built the company into the largest VISA/Mastercard manufacturer in the world. After he sold his business, he continued consulting work for several companies. Mr. Stonely was a member of the Board of the Mainstay Rock Hall, Rock Hall Yacht Club, Chester River Yacht and Country Club, Old Clarkonian Association, Capital Area Austin-Healey Club, Austin-Healey Sports and Touring Club and the Oarsman Society of the Capt. John Smith 400 Project. He loved competitive sport, and in his youth could boast of running the 100 yard in 10 seconds. He won a Southern Counties title in 1969. He loved sailing and cars and eventually became an aficionado of Austin Healeys. He competed in historic car rallies including the 2000 London to Peking Rally, the 2001 London Lisbon Classic Rally and the Open Roads 2002 50th Anniversary Encounter in his 1966 Austin Healey 3000 Mklll. He enjoyed sharing a good time in the company of his friends first at the pub “Retreat” in his youth, followed by his home in Rock Hall. A vibrant soul, he had a passion for travel, astronomy, cosmology, conversation, debate, maps and history and possessed a booming laugh and gentle yet arresting gaze.MR.. Stonely is survived by his wife of 32 years, Joyce Helen Stonely of Rock Hall, MD, one daughter, Karen Stonely and husband Peter Pelsinski, and one grandson, Lucien Stonely Pelsinski of New York, NY. Services will be held Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestertown, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the David and Joyce Stonely Memorial Fund c/o PNC Bank, 803 Washington Ave, Chestertown, MD 21620 to sustain neurological research.
