David Hall, Sr.

David Garth Hall, Sr. of Chestertown, Maryland formerly of Hockessin, Delaware died October 23, 2010 at his home. He was 86. He was born on March 28, 1924 in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of the late, Matthew and Eunice Sterndale Hall. He graduated from P.S. duPont High School in Wilmington and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator, mechanic, and gunner from February 1943 to October 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific medal with 3 bronze stars, and Distinguished Flying Cross and was honorably discharged as Technical Sergeant. Following his service in WWII, Mr. Hall attended night school for accounting, had a brief stint as a stockbroker, then worked as an automobile salesman for Colonial Chevrolet. In 1955 he decided to start his own company, Dave Hall Inc., a commercial construction company. The company earned a reputation for honesty and quality work, and built or renovated many commercial properties in and around New Castle County, Delaware. The company remains in business today. In August of 1986 he retired and traveled worldwide pursuing his great interest in Dixieland jazz music. Mr. Hall was an active water and snow skier well into his 70’s and was known for hosting family and friends at crab feasts, fish frys, and ski trips. He loved boating in the Chesapeake Bay, and decided to make Kent County, MD his permanent home in 1998. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Erminie Baldwin Hall, he is survived by his children, Tacie Johnsen and her husband, Vard of Dallas, TX, Lenore Michelinie and her husband, Bill of Chestertown, MD and Dave Hall, Jr. and his wife, Sue of Elkton, MD; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Jason, Shannon, Daniel, Katie, and Amie, Kelly, Lori, Jeannie, David and Sherri and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two siblings, Nancy Connor and her husband, Albert of Wilmington, DE, and Nathan Hall and his wife, Eleanor of Westlake Village, CA. He was predeceased by siblings Eunice, Rodger, Urban, Dorothy, and Ernest. Services will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home where a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.
