Dale Noah Merchant

Dale Merchant, 65 of Chestertown, MD, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 08, 2025. He was the son of the late Oliver Merchant and Emma Boyles Merchant of Chestertown. Dale’s life was challenged by many health problems with hospitalizations beginning at 15 years of age and lasting throughout his life. He met those challenges with strength and resilience; never giving up when the pain, countless medical procedures and frustration would have been too much to bear for anyone else. He attended Queen Annes County High School. Dale enjoyed fishing and crabbing. He was a sports fanatic: football, basketball and NASCAR. Although a quiet man by nature, he would be more than happy to talk endlessly about his beloved Orioles. He played ball in the Queen Annes County over 40 leagues. He loved to play horseshoes with his father and brother or with anyone who wanted to play. He played in many tournaments and won several championships. Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones were his favorite musicians. He was a faithful listener of the Howard Stern podcast. He had a unique talent to connect with pets. He was referred to as a Pet Whisperer. He will be missed by his pets Noli and Nipper. Dale was employed by NAPA for three years, where he was well liked by his employer and customers. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Eva Merchant and sister-in-law, Margaret Merchant. He is survived by two sisters, Rosine Handsberry of Dover, DE, Betty Richardson of Clayton, DE and one brother, Larry, of Clayton, DE. He had a very special bond with his niece, Robin Merchant, who was more like a sister and her daughter, Emily Hawthorne, who was like a daughter to him. In addition, he is survived by nieces and nephews: Billy Fisher, Eddie Fisher, Lisa Harrington, Eric Richardson, Rob Merchant and Lisa Watson; along with several great nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Monday, February 17 at 2:30 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home Chestertown, MD. Associate Pastor Scot McClymont, from Lifehouse Church in Smyrna, DE will officiate. Donations can be made to the Animal Care Shelter of Kent County at 10168 Worton Rd. Chestertown, MD 21620.
