C. Paul Cox II

C. Paul Cox, II of Easton died peacefully on Tuesday, December 18, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old. Born December 30, 1922 in Wayne, Pa., he was the son of Christopher Paul Cox and Cecil Davidson Cox. Mr. Cox graduated from The Haverford School in Haverford, Pa. in 1939. He majored in engineering at Yale University and graduated from there in 1944. Soon after graduation, he enrolled in the Navy’s ROTC program at Notre Dame University. After being posted in Ocracoke, NC, where he commanded a crash boat, he was then sent to Guam as part of a group called the “Beach Jumpers.” Following the Japanese surrender of World War II, he was posted to Tokyo where he served on the LSD “San Marcos.” After the war, he worked with his father and brother in the family business, Cox Distributing Co., a petroleum marketing company on the Delmarva Peninsula. He retired from there in 1992. Mr. Cox loved being on the water and was an accomplished sailor on the Chesapeake Bay. He raced in several classes, including Penguins and Stars, and participated in numerous regattas on the East Coast. He helped bring the Midget Ocean Racing Class to the Chesapeake Bay and won the MORC High Point Trophy twice. In May 1980, he married Joan Williams McCall in New York City. Together, the couple traveled the world extensively, visiting six continents and dozens of countries. He also enjoyed cruising up and down the Eastern seaboard with his wife on their trawler, Delphina. An avid pilot, he spent many hours in the air flying around the country. He frequently flew back and forth from Easton to Fishers Island, New York where he and his wife spent the summer. He will best be remembered among his family and friends for playing the piano. A talented musician, he was often cajoled into playing Christmas carols but his preference was jazz melodies from the 30s and 40s. He had the unusual skill of being able to play the piano and read magazines at the same time. Mr. Cox was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with his family. Wherever he traveled, he liked to visit airports and marinas. He was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Delmarva Water Transport Committee, the Greater Salisbury Committee, Oil Heat Assoc. of Delmarva, the Mid-Atlantic Petroleum Dealers Assoc., the Airplane Owners and Pilots Assoc. and the National Pilots Assoc. He was a long-time member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club and the Tred Avon Yacht Club. He was also a member of Hay Harbor Club and Fishers Island Yacht Club, both of Fishers Island, New York. He was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Clayton Cox, who died in Bermuda in 1976, and his brother Robert Cox of Easton who died in 1994. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children: C. Paul Cox, III and his wife, Kate of Oxford; David M. Cox and his wife, Julie of Easton; John Cox and his wife, Joy of Easton, and a daughter Elizabeth Cox of Stevensville and six stepsons, John McCall of New York, NY, Peter McCall of New York, NY, David McCall of Lawrenceville, NJ, Bill McCall of Philadelphia, Bob McCall of Seattle, WA and Tom McCall of Easton. He is also survived by five grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in his honor January 5, 2008 at noon at the Tred Avon Yacht Club in Oxford.
