Charles "Chick" Zakarian

Charles “Chick” Zakarian (88) of Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2015, at Frederick Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. He was born in Pawtucket, RI, on November 29, 1926, the son of the late Paul and Mary Thomasian Zakarian. He graduated in the January Class of 1945 from Pawtucket East High School in Pawtucket, RI, because he was drafted into the Army. He was in the first occupation troops in Japan during World War II. After his tour of duty, he obtained a Bachelor's of science degree in 1954 from Glenville State College in WV; a Master’s degree in 1957 from Columbia University in New York; and continued his studies at the University of Maryland and Yale University. Mr. Zakarian retired as the assistant superintendent of schools in Queen Anne’s County, MD, after 33 years of service (1955 to 1988), which began with teaching and coaching and serving as the Principal of Stevensville High School. Mr. Zakarian was a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church, where he served as past chairman of the administrative board; the Kent Island Heritage Society; and Queen Anne’s Arts Council. He was also a past president of the Retired Employees of Queen Anne’s County; life member of the Maryland – District of Columbia American School Business Officials; member of the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and Dance; past chairman of Maryland Negotiation Service; a member of Maryland Retired Teachers’ Association, the Armenian General Benevolent Union and past president of the Kent Island Lions Club. Also among his achievements was participating in the Wye Institute European Seminar in 1965; being honored after his retirement in 1988 by having the Queen Anne’s County High School Field House named in his honor; and being inducted into the Queen Anne’s County High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. After living 50 years on Kent Island, Mr. Zakarian and his wife moved to Frederick, MD, to be near his grandchildren, Megan and Stacie Lynch, whom he adored. He became their biggest fan in all their high school activities and became everyone’s Pop Pop. He also became a member of Walkersville United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bonel Poling Zakarian of Mt. Zion, WV; two sons, Paul Zakarian of Los Angeles, CA, and Craig Zakarian; one daughter, Dawn Lynch (Stephen); two granddaughters, Megan and Stacie Lynch, all of Frederick, MD; brother-in-law, Nishan Serabian; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Zakarian and Mary Serabian; and one brother, Hagop Zakarian. Visitation hours will be at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD on Sunday, July 19 from 2 - 4p.m. Burial will be private. Memorial services will be at Kent Island United Methodist Church on Monday, July 20, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kent Island United Methodist Church, 2739 Cox Neck Road, Chester, MD 21619 or Walkersville United Methodist Church, 22 Main Street, Walkersville, MD 21793.
