Charles "Chuck" Arnold Downey

Charles A. “Chuck” Downey of Millington, MD, died on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE. He was 79 years old. Mr. Downey was born in Chestertown, MD, the son of the late Jesse and Myrtle Thompson Downey. He graduated from Rock Hall High School, Class of 1956 and attended Wesley College in Dover, DE. He later enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for four years. Following his service to his country, Mr. Downey became a plumber and worked for William R. Maule & Son, Joseph T. Richardson, E.T. Kimble, Volair Contractors, and most recently for Pipes Plus Mechanical until retiring in 2010. Mr. Downey was very proud of his service with the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Co., where he became a Life Member and was presented a 50 year Active Member pin in 2017. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Post 652 Millington, and a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Rock Hall. He enjoyed playing guitar and entertaining at the local senior center. Mr. Downey played in several country music bands over the years. He loved to dance and helped at fire department activities at Sudlersville Vol. Fire Co. and Millington Vol. Fire Company. He enjoyed going to the VFW every Saturday night and spending time with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Downey is predeceased by his wife, Mary, as well as a granddaughter, Stephanie Anthony in 2013. He is survived by a daughter, Jo Manning and her husband Sam; a son, Jesse Downey Sr. and his wife Dina, both from Millington; two grandchildren, Jesse Downey Jr. and Jennifer Seager both of Millington; and four great-grandchildren, Riley Connelly and Clay Seager of Millington, Madison Bailey of Sudlersville, and Mia Tucker of Millington. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018, at 12:00 pm, at Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road in Chestertown, where relatives and friends may call one hour prior (11-12). Interment with Fire Department and Military Honors will follow in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Rock Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory go to Mid Shore Recovering Veterans Group (MSRVG), Bullitt House, 102 E. Dover St. Easton, MD, 21601.
