Calvin Rudolph Kendall

Calvin Rudolph Kendall of Rock Hall, MD, died on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at his home. He was 91. Born on January 17, 1927, in Skinner’s Neck, Rock Hall, MD, he was the son of the late George Elmer and Violet Marguerite (Crouch) Kendall. He was educated in Skinner’s Neck School. At the age of 16, with a note from his mother, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He proudly served three years during WWII. Returning to Rock Hall, he married Lois Oneida Coleman on October 5, 1946. Together they made their home in Rock Hall. Calvin worked with his father on the water and later with his uncle as an electrician and plumber, skills he would later combine to build Kendall’s Marina, now part of North Side Marina in Rock Hall. His true passion was working as a waterman. He ran a charter boat fishing business, owned and operated a fleet of workboats, owned Calvin’s Bait and Tackle Shop, and built six boats, all named “Lady Luck”. With family, he owned K-Foods grocery store in Rock Hall. Calvin was instrumental in perfecting the patent tong used for oystering up and down the bay. He was a member of the Kent County and Maryland Waterman’s Association where he held license number 35. He assisted in the planting of oyster beds in conjunction with the State of Maryland, held positions with the State Oyster Committee, and worked with the Maryland Corp of Engineers. He was a member of Chester Lodge AF&AM #115 and Sgt. Preston Ashley American Legion Post #228 In Rock Hall. Calvin could be frequently seen at Ferry Park, watching sunsets with his sweetie. At his home, he enjoyed watching the boats go by, ospreys, hummingbirds and squirrels. He was a staple at the Pasta Plus “roundtable” where all world issues are solved. Rock Hall was dear to his heart as were his many friends. He lived his life according to the Golden Rule, of treating others as one’s self would wish to be treated. He was a friend to all and a mentor to many. Along with his parents he was predeceased by Lois, his wife of 61 years, and his brother, George Crouch Kendall. He is survived by a son, Arthur Kendall and his wife, Bonnie, of Rock Hall; a daughter, Gail Claggett and her husband, Herschell, of Chestertown; five grandchildren, Christopher Kendall (Stacy), Amy Hague, Mark Kendall (Heather), Kyle Kirby (Kristin), and Bradford Kirby; nine great-grandchildren, Savannah Midkiff (Jon), Tristan Hague, Brooke Hague, Dylan Kendall, Olivia Kendall, Alexis Kendall, Ethan Kendall, Adyson Kendall and Bailey Kirby; and his beloved friend, Jeanne Davis. Services will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at 1:30 pm at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, in Rock Hall, where relatives and friends may call from 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery. A reception will be held at Rock Hall Vol. Fire Co, following the interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Compass Regional Hospice, 160 Coursevall Drive, Centreville, MD 21617 or the Kent County Waterman’s Association, 6645 Rock Hall Rd., Rock Hall, MD 21661.
