C. Harry Schreiber Jr.

C. Harry Schreiber, Jr. of Chestertown, MD, died on November 6, 2022. He was 88 years old. He was born in Columbus, OH, on April 1, 1934, the son of Charles Harry Schreiber, Sr. and Audrey Sard Schreiber. He grew up in Chicago, Cleveland, and Columbus. He then went on to receive his BS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1955. He began work with G.M. Trucking in their computer requirements systems study during the summers and after graduation from MIT took up his ROTC commission in the U.S. Army. While serving at Fort Devens, he received an MBA from Boston University and went on to become a Teaching Assistant at MIT. Mr. Schreiber began a data processing company, Data Services Inc., out of the back door at MIT. He served as President of Data Services Inc., working with major department stores to computerize their inventories for the first time. He later sold the company, but continued his work as a retail and distribution consultant. He earned his CPA and was National Practice Director for Merchandise Consulting at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell (PMM) while residing in Wellesley, MA, and commuting weekly to the PMM headquarters on Wall Street in New York City. He moved his family to Reston, VA, in 1968 and subsequently to Winnetka, IL, when he joined Deloitte, Haskins, and Sells as Partner for Retailing and Distribution. He continued to travel extensively, consulting with retail and distribution companies across the world until retiring to Chestertown. Mr. Schreiber was founding Chairman of the Retail Industry Division of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers (AIIE). He has delivered the Tobe Lecture in Retailing at the Harvard School of Business. His wife, Margaret “Peg” Heinzman Schreiber, whom he married in 1955, died in 2018. He is survived by his children, Margaret “Meghan” E. Yeager of Reston, VA, Thomas E. Schreiber of Palm Harbor, FL, and Amy K. Garcia of Leesburg, VA; a sister, Marjorie Schreiber Kinsey of South Bend, IN; as well as three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Tuesday, November 15, at 1:00 pm, at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. A visitation will be held one hour prior, from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Chester Cemetery.
