Bert Jackson

BERT JACKSON (Hubert N. Jackson Jr.) of Parsons Island passed away on Saturday August 22, 2015, due to complications from Cystic Fibrosis, at Johns Hopkins Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was the son of the late Hubert N. Jackson Sr. and Norma and Bill Patton. Born on March 7, 1955, in Easton, MD. He lived in Queen Anne, Centreville, and Parsons Island. He graduated from Queen Anne’s County High School in 1974 where he played football and lacrosse. He grew up following his grandfather foot to foot on Parsons Island and worked with him there in his teens and after he graduated from high school. He left Parsons Island in 1980 to pursue other interests. He worked as a Farrier at several Standard Bred Race Tracks and farms then as a Waterman and Charter Boat Captain. In 1991, he returned to the home and job he loved on Parsons Island. Bert managed the island for 24 years. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, and he was a Master Class Competitive Sporting Clay Shooter and Instructor. He enjoyed shooting with and talking to everyone he met. Bert had several mentors who influenced his life including, Bunny Mears (Rifle Club), Judge Raymond Horney (St. Paul’s Acolyte Director), his paternal grandfather, Joe Jackson; Uncle “Doc” Jackson who instilled his knowledge and love of farming; his maternal grandfather, Joe Usilton, who fostered Bert’s love for the outdoors and people. He provided Bert experiences and knowledge that served him well in every aspect of his life. His father, Hubert Jackson, taught him about racing and horses when Bert worked with him as a groom on his farm and several race tracks. Bert owned two Standardbred Horses in the late 70s and early 80s, Major Crain with his father; and Egyptian Dart with his Cousin Rusty. His stepfather, Bill Patton, who was there to support & guide him throughout and life and illness. His grandmothers, Marie Jackson & Miriam Usilton, were invaluable in his life. Bert had many friends whose company he cherished and enjoyed. He mentored several young men in his life, those closest to his heart were Tommy Tucker, his “Summer Son;” Justin Kaufman his godson; and Mike Luongo, sporting clay partner & friend. He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Elizabeth Hoskins Jackson, of Parsons Island; his mother and stepfather, Norma and Bill Patton; his sisters, Kathy Anderson (Gary), Mary Beth Abruzzo (John) and Carol O’Donnell (John); brother, Tom Jackson; cousins he considered brothers, Rusty Russell and Richards Tillman; lifelong friends, Tom Parker and Marion Kaufman; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at the home of his parents, Bill and Norma Patton, in Chester, MD, on Saturday August 29, 2015, at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the charity of your choice or The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Maryland Chapter, 10626 York Road, Suite A, Cockeysville, Maryland 21030.
