Andrew Morton Smith, Jr.

Andrew Morton Smith, Jr., D.D.S., the first dentist to practice full time in Severna Park, Maryland died on Friday, February 20, 2009 at his home in Easton, MD. He was 88 years old. Born in Lonaconing, MD., he was the son of Andrew Morton and Barbara Scott Smith. He was a 1937 graduate of Central High School in Lonaconing. He was a member of the basketball and track teams. In his senior year he was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Orange and Black. He enjoyed tennis and in 1937 won a junior tennis tournament at Mountain Lake Park that included players from five Mid-Atlantic States. He attended Catherman’s Business School in Cumberland, MD and then worked in the personnel department of the Kelly Springfield Tire Company. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and was sent to the European theatre where he earned five battle stars for the campaigns in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. Eleven years after being out of high school, with a wife and two year old son, he enrolled in the pre-dental program at the University of Maryland College Park and graduated in June 1954 from the University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore with a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. In the same year he opened a dental practice in Severna Park, Maryland and maintained this practice until his retirement in December 1990. Many of his patients became personal friends during his 36 years in practice. They loved his marvelous sense of humor, which he freely shared with his patients and friends. He was a former member of the Severna Park Rotary Club and a trustee of both Benfield Elementary and Folger McKinsey Elementary Schools. In June 1943 he married the former, Lois Virginia Wooden. They lived in Lonaconing after military service and then moved to Severna Park after dental school in 1954. Then in 1974 they moved to Queenstown, MD where they stayed until moving to William Hill Manor, a retirement village in Easton, MD. Dr. Smith became an avid golfer in 1961 when Chartwell Golf and Country Club opened. As he moved he joined Prospect Bay Golf Course in Queenstown and Caroline Country Club in Denton. He enjoyed waterfowl and quail hunting, as well as training retrievers and birddogs. He also had a lifelong passion for fishing. Perhaps most of all, he loved to dance with his wife, Virginia to the music of the big bands, especially his favorite son, the Third Man Theme. In addition to his wife, Virginia, with whom he has celebrated 66 years of marriage, he is survived by two sons, Andrew M. Smith, III and his wife, Karen of Annapolis, MD and Gary W. Smith and his wife, Debbie of Port St. Lucie, FL and three grandchildren, Brennan, Andy and Kristen. He was predeceased by his sister, Helen Scott Smith of Lonaconing, MD. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at William Hill Manor in Easton, MD on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM. Burial will be private.
