Alan R. Griffith

Alan R. Griffith passed away peacefully in his home in Centreville, MD, on December 2, 2025. Son of Charles Ernest and Amalie (Guenther) Griffith, he was born on December 17, 1941, in Mineola, NY. Alan is survived by his wife and loving companion of 61 years, Elizabeth (Penny), whom he married on November 28, 1964. Together, they raised two children, Timothy and Elizabeth (Libby) Hipp. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Anne Corso, his son-in-law, Thomas Hipp, two grandchildren, whom he adored, Amalie (and her fiancé, Cristian Silvestre) and Henry (and his wife, Meghan Haddad-Hipp). Alan was the middle of three brothers, Charles (Chuck), who passed in 2024, and David. He was also a generous and devoted presence in the lives of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, loving family members, close friends, and dear neighbors – all of whom he cherished throughout his lifetime. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in government and law from Lafayette College (’64) and a Master of Business Administration degree from Baruch College of the City University of New York. Prior to Lafayette College, Alan attended the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT. In 2005, Alan retired as Vice Chair of The Bank of New York and The Bank of New York Corporation, Inc., after a distinguished 41-year career with the organization. During his last 10 years at the Bank, he directed the international banking sector. Before serving as Vice Chair in 1994, he served as President for four years. Prior to this, he served as Director of the Bank and the Corporation, and as a member of the bank’s Senior Planning Committee. Among the many responsibilities he held during his career was the formation of a division to provide financing and banking services to the communications, entertainment, and publishing industries. At the time of his retirement, The Bank of New York endowed a scholarship fund at Lafayette College in his name. Alan Griffith had a long and distinguished record of service to Lafayette College, his beloved alma mater. He served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for nine years, member of the Board’s Steering Committee, and Chair of the Executive Committee. During his years on the Board, he served on the Committee on Student Life, the Committee on Financial Policy, and the Special Committee on Information Technology. He received Lafayette’s George T. Woodring ’19 Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999 and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 2001. Alan cared deeply about the communities in which he lived, and he embraced a myriad of volunteer roles throughout his life. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of ALS United of Greater New York, dedicated to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, for over 25 years. He was Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM), and a member of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). Alan was a conservationist and a passionate and active member of the Queen Anne’s Conservation Association (QACA). He was a former board member of the Shore Rivers. He worshipped and served on the Vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Centreville, MD, and was active in the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, NJ, for many years. Alan will be remembered for his quick wit, dry humor, authentic interest in the lives of his family and friends, and his overall resounding presence, authenticity, and generosity.
