A. Gibson Packard

Dr. A. Gibson Packard, the son of Albert G. and Eva DeFord Packard died of a brain tumor in Sanibel Florida on June 16, 2015. He was raised in Baltimore and graduated from Johns Hopkins University. After serving as an officer in The Corps of Engineers in Korea, he returned to Baltimore, where he graduated cum laude from The University of Maryland School of Medicine. He performed his residency and fellowship at the New York Orthopedic Hospital of Columbia University, New York Presbyterian Hospital. He opened his own practice in Baltimore and served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University from 1959 to 1970. He was noted for his work in complicated fractures and shoulder repair. In 1970, he and his family moved to Oxford, MD. He opened his medical office which attracted several other physicians and became Chesapeake Orthopedics, the first orthopedic specialty office on the Eastern Shore. He especially liked the possibility of knowing and caring for all members of a family from children to the elderly. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the International Bone and Joint Society and the New York Orthopedic Society. In the 1980s, he started Mid-Shore Industries where he designed metal devises for industry such as Black and Decker and Johnson and Johnson. He took many courses in advanced metallurgy and welding techniques at the University of Wisconsin and was a nationally certified welder. He taught machining and welding at Chesapeake College. After he retired from his medical practice, he continued making and repairing antique structures such as the fountain in Idlewild Park and special hardware for the Maritime Museum. Dr. Packard is mourned by his wife of 64 years, Mary Frances Reeves Packard; his son, A. Gibson Packard III, and his family of Augusta, GA; and his daughter, Tracy Packard Ferrell and her family of Falls Church, VA. His son, Stanley Reeves Packard, predeceased him. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at Holy Trinity Church, Oxford, MD, at 11 a.m. Because of his great belief in education, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Talbot County Free Library Foundation, Gibson Packard Memorial Fund.
