William C. Hill

William Caulk Hill, “Doc Hill,” passed away at Easton Memorial Hospital on July 3, 2012, surrounded by his family. Born at home in Easton on January 28, 1925, he was the son of Marian Charlotte Caulk and William David Hill. Doc lived all his life in Talbot County, had a love for the community, and had a unique gift for relating and connecting with people. In 1941, he married his childhood sweetheart, Mettie Marie Howard, who predeceased him in 1986. Doc attended public schools in Easton where he excelled in athletics. He was a talented baseball player, playing professional minor league baseball for the Easton Yankees. He attended Washington College until he left to enter the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the World War II. Upon graduating from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Science in 1950, he returned home to join the family business, Hill’s Drug Store, which his father founded in 1928. Following in his father’s footsteps, he never lost his passion and dedication for community pharmacy. It was not unusual for Doc to gladly drive into town to fill a prescription in the middle of the night for a customer in need. He served as President of the Maryland Pharmaceutical Associations and served on committees for the National Association of Retail Druggists. He was on the cover of the National Association of Retail Druggist magazine which won the National Cover Award that year. Doc was a member and volunteer of numerous organizations. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, and, in his later years, became an avid golfer. He had a beautiful tenor voice, singing at many local weddings and occasions over the years. In 1987, Doc married Vera Smith Boggess, who predeceased him in 2004. Doc is survived by his children, William David Hill (Debbie), Pamela Hill Lappen (Mark), Mimi Hill Shannahan (John), C. Jennifer Gray LeCompte (Don); and 11 grandchildren, Cindy, Lynda, Will, Chad, Bee, Hill, Hunter, Luke, Brittany, Gray, Reilly; and one great-grandchild, Laurie. Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 9, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 7906 Ocean Gateway in Easton where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10. The burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery. A reception will be held after the burial at William Hill Manor, 501 Dutchman’s Lane, Easton, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sts. Peter & Paul High School, 900 High Street, Easton, MD 21601 or the Palliative Care Unit at Memorial Hospital, 219 S. Washington St., Easton, MD 21601.
