Mary E. Herr-Stoppel

Mary E. Herr-Stoppel, 95, died Monday, December 14 at Rock of Ages Assisted Living in Rock Hall, Maryland. Born in New Holland, Pennsylvania on May 30, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Harry Weber Wenzel and Viola Diller Wenzel. Her family later moved a short distance to what we all remember as the Wenzel family farm in Creswell. She lived there until she married C. Richard Herr in 1944. She was very proud of her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. In 1952, they moved to Chestertown, Maryland, and the Eastern Shore quickly became home to the Herr family. She and Dick were married for 55 years before he died in 1999. In 2000, she married William V. Stoppel. They enjoyed their life together before his death in 2017. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Vera. E. Falk, Ethel I. Schmid and John D. Wenzel. She is survived by 4 children: Sharlene L Keen (Parker), Thomas L. Herr (Betsy), Melinda S. Blyman (William) and David R. Herr (Deanna). She was also a beloved grandmother to Drew Keen, Beth Carlton, Ben Herr, Molly Gartlan, Brent Blyman, Lindsay White and Cole Herr, in addition to 12 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her youngest sister, Helen Barley Herr and many nieces and nephews. Mary enjoyed life and people. She had the gift of hospitality and opened her home and table to one and all. She hosted countless picnics and reunions over the years. She loved flowers and always had beautiful gardens. She appreciated music of all kinds and shared her talent for playing the piano and organ often. Most extended family gatherings included Mary and her sisters gathering around the piano. She attended more than one church over the years where she joyfully served the Lord. She felt fortunate to have traveled to many different countries. She lived at Rock of Ages Assisted Living the final four years of her life. They cared for her, loved her and advocated for her. Mary's family is grateful to Bonnie Tucker and her staff: Dolly, Mandy, Jacob, Charity and Helen. Mary's life will be celebrated with a private family service.
