John Edward Hanifee Sr.

John Edward Hanifee, Sr., “Jack,” passed away February 8, 2023, at PAM Rehabilitation Hospital in Dover, DE, at the age of 93. Jack was born March 1, 1929 in Earleville, MD, the son of the late James Patrick Hanifee and Lydia Hanifee (nee Newnam). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Dorothy Hanifee (nee Holden); two daughters, Patricia “Patsy” Hamann and Virginia “Ginny” McGinnis; two brothers, James “Jimmy” Hanifee and William “Billy” Hanifee; three sisters, Betty “Whitey” Mount, Mae Wallace, and Mary “Bean” Hanifee; and two grandchildren, Kindra Brown, and Roy Thomas. He spent his 21-year career working for the State Highway Administration, retiring in 1992, but his true vocation was that of a farmer. When he wasn’t tilling the soil or plowing the roads, he was raising everything from horses and cattle, to lima beans, to barn cats. His legendary garden fed us all. His real passion was his race horses, spending many a day at the stables, and many long nights at the track. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting with his son. And, of course, always at his heels were his faithful companions, his many dogs, large and small. His first grandchild coined a name that stuck with him for the rest of his life. Though still Jack to his friends, to everyone else, family or not, he was Pappy. He is survived by his only son, John Hanifee, Jr.; one daughter, the baby of his brood, Susan Bonwill (Mark Walls), all of Sudlersville, MD; eight grandchildren, Missy, Todd, Jack, Jake, Cody, Tyler, Lewis, Bryan; sixteen great-grandchildren, Gregory, Brandon, Michael, Kendall, Rylee, Jason, Jaron, Jacob, Jessie, Jamie, Cadence, Esme, Addie, Destini, C.J., Emory; five great-great-grandchildren; as well as a brother, Alan Hanifee. A visitation will be held Monday, February, 13, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. at Fellows Family Funeral Home, 370 Cypress St., Millington, MD. A service will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 11 a.m. also at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Sudlersville Cemetery in Sudlersville, MD.
