George Craig Cook

George Craig Cook, a retired teacher and school administrator, died Monday of a cerebral hemorrhage at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He was 69. Born in Grottoes, VA, on June 10, 1933, he was the son of the late Evans Patterson and Louise Odell Dean Cook. He attended Wilson Memorial High School, which was located on the grounds of the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center, a major hospital built to serve the injured in World War II. He graduated in 1952, attended college for one year, and then left to serve in the Korean War. He returned to college and graduated in 1958. During his college years he played semi pro baseball with the Staunton Braves. After graduating from Glenville State Teachers College in WV, George began his teaching career at Stevensville High School on Kent Island in 1958. While there, he taught Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and other sciences until 1966, when he left the shore to teach at Annapolis Junior High School. He began his tenure there as a science teacher until he became Vice Principal at the school in 1968 and served in that position until 1987. He earned his Masters of Science Degree in 1963 from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. He pursued further academic studies when he obtained Sabbatical leave to study at the University of Delaware in 1985 – 1986. He lived in Stevensville, MD, for 38 years and even after moving to Queenstown he traveled to Kent Island everyday to see friends and feed the ducks and geese inhabiting the shore. Through the years his hobbies included golf, hunting, duck decoy carving and a passion for his garden that he shared with others. Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Catherine MacGregor Cook of Queenstown, MD; a son, Scott Craig Cook and his wife, April Moreland, of Chester, MD; three brothers, Evans Patterson Cook, Jr. of Austin, TX, James Leonard Cook of Front Royal, VA, and Thomas Arthur Cook of Weyers Cave, VA ,and two grandchildren, Evan Scott Cook and Taylor Leigh Cook. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 21, 2003, at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P. A. in Chester, MD, where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Scholarship Fund of Kent Island Heritage Society, P.O.
