Claire E. Nichols

Claire Eichenlaub Nichols, 87, formally of Erie, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, September 11, 2007 in Easton, Maryland. Born in Erie, PA, Claire was the daughter of the late George and Dean Eichenlaub. She spent her entire life in Erie, where she especially enjoyed the nature offerings of the Presque Isle Peninsula. Picnics on the beach, biking, birding (an Audubon member), swimming, hiking, and cranberry picking and sailing on Lake Erie. She devoted a great deal of her time to the Girls Scouts of America, and was very involved with the Niagra Museum. Her love of History and Sailing was expressed as she led tours at the museum and sailed on the Niagra. As a member of the Erie Yacht Club, (as was her father) she was very interested in the Yacht Club history and helped compile a historical library of the EYC for future reference. She enjoyed golfing as a member of Lake Shore CC and also Kahkwa CC. And was an accomplished bridge player. Remarkable for her vigor and zest for life, even in her 86th year she enjoyed the outdoors and was walking and biking, She moved to Easton, Maryland in 2002, to reside at the Londonderry Community, to be closer to her daughter, Susan. She continued to be very active, joining the Art Museum, the Womans Club, and participated on many committees at the Londonderry. Claire is survived by her loving family. A daughter, Susan Bray and her husband Horace, of Grasonville, MD, a granddaughter, Deborah Roschli and her husband Tom, and two great grandchildren, Amanda and Paige. A son David Allburn and his wife Jan, of Glouster, Ohio and two grandchildren, Jason Allburn and Edward Allburn. Claire has a brother Kendall E. Keen in Douglas, Wyoming. She is predeceased by her sister Janet Woodward, and a granddaughter Anne Kendall Koeppl. She is survived by a large extended family and many friends. The family will welcome friends in a reception of Claire’s memory on Friday, September 21, 2007 at 2:30 pm at the Londonderry Retirement Community of Easton, 700 Port Street, Easton, MD 21601.
