Audrey Virginia Hawkins

Born on November 1, 1918, in Baltimore, MD, Audrey was the daughter of the late Roland W. H. Bruscup and Leila Johnson Bruscup. She grew up in Baltimore and was a graduate of Eastern High School. After high school, she married John William Hawkins, Jr.. and had two children, John William Hawkins, III. who died in 1944 and Virginia Lee. They resided in Baltimore where Audrey worked as a bookkeeper for an automotive parts supplier. In 1957. they moved to Stevensville, MD, on Kent Island. They purchased farm land and began to learn farming as they continued to commute to Baltimore for the next 10 years. In 1969, Audrey started working for the State Comptroller's Office in Annapolis in the Income Tax Division. Mr. Hawkins died in 1971. Audrey retired from full-time state employment in 1982 and continued to work for the State of Maryland on a part-time basis for several more years. Following retirement, she worked with the Queen Anne’s County Visitors Center as a travel counselor. She was a charter member of the Kent Island Historical Society and served as a Board Member, President, Treasurer, and Docent Coordinator. In recognition of her dedicated service to the community, she received the "Maryland's Most Beautiful" award in 1995 and represented Queen Anne's County in the state ceremony. In 2009, she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Maryland Department of Aging in recognition of her contributions as part of the mature workforce of Queen Anne's County. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and played a role in organizing and fundraising to unite the three Methodist churches on Kent Island. As a member of the Kent Island United Methodist Church, she was active in the choir and other church groups over the years. She also enjoyed singing with the Maryland State Employees' Choir and was a member of the Kent Island Yacht Club. She was an avid traveler with her local group of friends and, when not traveling around the world, she enjoyed life on Kent Island. Mrs. Hawkins is survived by her daughter, Virginia Lee Ingling of College Park, MD; a grandson, Allen L. Ingling, Jr., of Rockville, MD; and a sister-in-law, Myrtle Bruscup of Chester, MD. In addition to her husband and son, she was predeceased by a brother, Roland O. Bruscup of Chester, MD (2003). A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Kent Island United Methodist Church in Chester where family and friends may call one hour before and on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, MD 21619. Interment will follow in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore, MD. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice
