Harriett Elizabeth "Betty" Burris

July 15, 1933 - January 16, 2022

Harriett Elizabeth “Betty” Burris passed away on January 16, 2021 at Whispering Pines in Rock Hall, MD. She was 88 years old. Betty was born on July 15, 1933 in Kent County, MD, the daughter of Arthur H. and Helen Shinn Burris. She grew up in Chestertown and graduated from Chestertown High School with the class of 1952. She then attended Goldey-Beacom College. She went on to have a career as a legal secretary and worked on Lawyers Row and at the Kent County Courthouse until she retired in 2010. She was a backyard bird watcher. Betty was a wonderful hostess. She served delicious refreshments enjoyed at her Wednesday night craft group. Her annual shopping trips were complete with lists of gift ideas to make Christmas special for her nieces and nephews. She was known for her quick wit, keen sense of humor, and an uncanny ability to remember facts and details. Betty also enjoyed learning about her family’s genealogy. She was preceded in death by seven siblings; John A. Burris, R. Franklin Burris, William R. Burris, and Bruce C. Burris, Lee B. Gears, Mary Lou Jones, and Sara V. Ostrowske. She is survived by 17 nieces and nephews as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Thursday, January 20, 2021 at 12:00 pm at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. A visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior, from 11:00am-12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Still Pond Cemetery.
